ZIMBABWE Rugby Union is targeting more foreign-based players to play for the Sables, as part of its plan to qualify for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
This comes after the team lifted the Rugby Africa in Uganda last month, boosting interest in more foreign players to consider joining.
At the Africa Cup, Zimbabwe was boosted by foreign-based players like Ian Prior, France-based Cleopas Kundiona and Tino Masevere who plays for the Sharks in South Africa.
Already, reports have indicated that Kyle Godwin who plays for Lyon in France is ready to commit to play for the Sables and Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Losson Mtongwiza assured that more of the players are coming on board.
“We are going to make sure that those players come through and are received well.
“We want to make sure that we attend every Rugby World Cup going forward and that can only happen if we feature top-class players based abroad,” he said.
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union has already established a roadmap for the Sables ahead of next year’s Rugby Africa Cup and this includes touring the United Arab Emirates in November before going to Europe to play Portugal.
“We have got a big plan, we intend to go on a trip to the United Arab Emirates in November to play one or two games.
“From there we will go to Europe and play two or three games again.
“Then early next year we will go to South Africa to play two or three big clubs,” he added.
Zimbabwe last qualified for Rugby World Cup in 1991, currently, the team is sitting on position 28 in the World Rugby rankings. — NewZimbabwe
