Newcastle came within touching distance of pulling off one of the greatest results in the club’s European history as they put in a defensive masterclass against Paris Saint-Germain, only to concede a controversial penalty in stoppage-time that Kylian Mbappe converted to rescue a 1-1 draw for the hosts.

Knowing a defeat would see them exit the competition, the Magpies were put under early pressure as Nick Pope kept out an Mbappe flick with his legs. At the other end, though, Alexander Isak fired over from close range after a fine cross from Miguel Almiron.

The Sweden striker made amends soon after, however, as he lashed home after Gianluigi Donnarumma could only parry Almiron’s weak shot from the edge of the area into his path, and Newcastle saw out the first half relatively comfortable.

Things were different after the break, though, as Pope made fine saves to deny Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola, while both players also fired off target when well placed. However, with time running out, Tino Livramento was adjudged to have handled in the box, and Mbappe made no mistake from the spot.

Goalkeeper & Defence

Nick Pope (9/10):

Decent stops to deny Mbappe and Dembele in the first half were nothing on his superb stop to keep out Barcola midway through the second. Kind of peformance to make Gareth Southgate to take notice.

Kieran Trippier (8/10):

Block tackle on Mbappe early on set the tone for the evening and he kept the French superstar so quiet that he was moved centrally in the second half. Showed all his experience in a hostile atmosphere.

Jamal Lascelles (9/10):

Two blocks inside the first minute were a sign of things to come from the resurrected club captain. Headed, blocked and tackled everything that entered the Newcastle box as he led from the front.

Fabian Schar (8/10):

Made a number of key blocks and clearances at the heart of the Newcastle defence as he ensured Kolo Muani had a quiet evening.

Tino Livramento (8/10):

Outstanding up against Dembele and Hakimi as both men struggled to create much of note. Got forward well too, and fine run across the penalty area led to Isak’s goal. So unfortunate to have the penalty given against him late on.

Midfield

Bruno Guimaraes (8/10):

Threw his body in the way of a number of shots as he shielded the defence brilliantly. Kept things ticking over in midfield when he got on the ball.

Lewis Miley (9/10):

Outrageously composed on his full Champions League debut as he looked anything but a 17-year-old rookie. Made some key blocks in the penalty area and never looked flustered in possession. A real talent.

Joelinton (7/10):

Booked in the first half but maintained his discipline thereafter as an energetic presence in midfield.

Attack

Miguel Almiron (9/10):

Absolutely outstanding in winning the ball back in what was a tireless display from the Paraguyan playmaker. Shot from the edge of the box led to Isak’s goal.

Alexander Isak (7/10):

Made amends for a poor early miss by showing great instinct to latch onto Donnarumma’s poor parry from Almiron’s shot. Worked hard otherwise, but was guilty of poor decision-making at times.

Anthony Gordon (6/10):

Needed to show more care in possession at times as he gave the ball away or put his team-mates under pressure too often. Worked so hard off the ball, though, to help Livramento defend PSG’s dangerous right-hand side.

Subs & Manager

Eddie Howe (8/10):

Had few selection decisions to make due to the number of players that were unavailable to him, but set his team up superbly and clearly instilled belief into them that victory was possible. So unfortunate not to leave with three points. — Goal
