THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) Bulawayo office yesterday revealed that it had registered about 7 000 new voter registrants since the mobile registration blitz was launched early last month.
“I cannot tell you the precise figure but we managed to get around 7 000 people in the first phase of the voter registration blitz, which was closed on February 28 last month. This does not mean that we have closed our offices. Those who feel like they want to register can come as it is a continuous process,” Zec provincial elections officer Innocent Ncube said.
He said only one centre in the city will continue to register voters.
He said the second phase of the voter registration blitz will be opened again on April 10 and run until April 30.
The biometric voter registration blitz has been marred by voter apathy with some aspiring voters having been turned away due to lack of documentation.
According to Zec, Bulawayo has the lowest number of registered voters at 254 630, followed by Matabeleland South with 259 869 and Matabeleland North standing
at 335 851.
