GWERU City Council has invited private players to construct the Mtapa vegetables market almost a year after the vending site was taken over by suspected Zanu PF youths.
In a notice yesterday under tender number COG/01/2022, acting town clerk Vakai Chikwekwe said the tender process for the supply and construction of Mtapa market vending stalls will close on Friday.
“Tender documents containing bidding instructions and the scope of work are obtainable in hard copy at City of Gweru, townhouse, third floor, during working hours (0830 to 1600 hours) upon payment of a refundable fee of $2 000 or free of
charge in electronic form upon the interested bidder’s request on email,”Chikwekwe said.
They grabbed the vending stalls in May last year with residents associations calling on the local authority to rein in the politicians to avoid politicisation of the informal market.
Gweru has over 5 000 informal traders who are on the waiting list and council has been facing headaches in accommodating them.
As a temporary measure, the city allocated vending space at the Mtapa
The increase in the number of people interested in vending has been attributed to the closure of companies in the Midlands capital.
