A Chitungwiza man Tomson Mazhetese is on the run for allegedly encouraging the public to participate in a protest against President Emerson Mnangagwa’s rule and human rights abuse.
Mazhetese is understood to have fled the country after having been tipped off that the police wanted to arrest him. There are over one hundred opposition supporters and human rights defenders who were arrested before the SADC summit by the police on allegations of illegal gatherings and planning of mass protests. They have been denied bail by the courts and have been in custody since June 16, 2024.
Human rights defenders were abducted by state security agency at the Robert Mugabe International Airport and were tochered for over eight hours. They have also been denied bail.
In another incident police arrested the recalled CCC MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda on allegations that in incited public protests against the government ahead of the SADC summit. Sibanda has since been denied bail.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has been arresting opposition supporters and human rights activists on the pretext that they were planning mass protests to discredit the government of President Emerson Mnangagwa prior to the SADC summit which was held in Harare on the 17th of August this year.
