President Donald Trump has claimed that the US carried out a “large-scale strike against Venezuela” and captured its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, along with his wife.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said Maduro and his wife had been captured and flown out of the country. He wrote:
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.
“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Maduro was reportedly captured by the US Army’s Delta Force, the military’s elite counter-terrorism unit.
Trump provided no further details about how Maduro was captured or where he has been taken, and the Venezuelan government has yet to confirm the claims.
The US had previously offered a $50 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest.
