Mafikizolo front woman Nhlanhla Mafu is reportedly angling to leave the legendary group after 28 years, as she wants to put more focus on her solo career.
Mafikizolo, an award-winning duo, consisting of a female lead singer, Nhlanhla, and the composer, Theo Kgosinkwe, was initially a trio, but third member, Tebogo Madingoane was shot and killed in a public brawl in 2004.
Despite their longevity, Nhlanhla is reportedly looking to break out solo, releasing solo singles while also performing alone.
According to a close friend of the singer, Mafu feels that the time is now ripe for her solo breakout.
“She is definitely pushing harder on her solo career and taking her own bookings outside of the duo,” a close friend revealed. “It’s about time. People still love Mafikizolo but every group member needs to pursue a career outside of the group.”
Contacted for comment, Nhlanhla said she and her fellow member has always been separately managed and were free to pursue solo ventures.
“Theo and I have always had our own individual managers because we are two unique brands who make up Mafikizolo as a duo,’ she told ZiMoja.
“Mafikizolo as a group still continues to work together and we have our manager as a group. Both myself and Theo will from time to time make announcements when we work on projects within and outside the group.”
