South Africans have come together to rally behind music sensation, Samthing Soweto, after he was not credited for his vocals in ‘Amalanga Awafani’.
Fans have threatened to boycott the newly released Amampiano hit featuring Mas Musiq, Lawd Weezy, Dj Maphorisa and StarQuality.
Samthing Soweto, whose real name is Samkelo Mdolomba, took to X where he posted a broken heart.
Several people have been reporting the song on streaming platforms such as Apple Music.
However, some citizens say the Amagents hitmaker is difficult to work with, suggesting that he does not honour contractual agreements.
Renowned producer, Maphorisa, addressed the issue on an Instagram live, where he says Samthing Soweto was not credited because of the back and forth they had regarding the master shares of the song.
He explains how they got to the decision to allow Mas Musiq to drop the song, through his label.
Maphorisa has pleaded with the public to not persecute Mas Musiq for his mess with Samthing Soweto.
“If you want to cancel anyone, cancel me and not Mas Musiq.”
The famous producer even went as far as comparing Samthing Soweto to Sir Trill, who he had a fall out with last year.
Samthing Soweto has now been credited following the backlash.
This is not the first time an artist has been oppressed in the music industry.
The likes of Sir Trill have expressed how they’ve allegedly not received money for some of the songs they’ve worked on.
They’ve also lamented gatekeeping in the industry.
Unfair contracts have become one of the most common forms of exploitation in the sector, especially for upcoming artists.
This often leads to musicians having little to no control over their work.
Some have even petitioned the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, to intervene. — YFm
