A SECURITY guard employed by Beitbridge Town Council has been arrested for allegedly insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the current economic woes facing ordinary citizens.
Accused person, Ezekiel Chiradza aged 35, was arrested and charged for allegedly ridiculing Mnangagwa, whom he accused of gross economic mismanagement.
Further, Chiradza is accused of disapproving the use of the newly introduced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency.
Arrested by police officers on September 2, 2024, Chiradza now faces charges of undermining authority of or insulting the President as defined in section 33(2)(a)(ii) of Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The security guard reportedly recorded a video and circulated it on a WhatsApp group called Zim Politics.
In the said footage, accused person was singing and uttering some words condemning the 81-year-old Zanu PF leader while on the other hand praising Nelson Chamisa, his rival in last year’s general elections.
Chiradza is represented by Patrick Tererai of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
