A 27-year-old Chegutu man with a history of violence in the community, has been arrested for the brutal murder of his friend after a beer-drinking spree last Tuesday evening.
Accused person was identified as Saul Shezhu of Jinkstown, Chegutu.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, a witness Stepmore Mutandavari, who is also a friend of the deceased, Nyikadzino Mataruse (42) said they spent the whole day drinking beer before Shezhu arrived.
“We spent the whole day drinking beer together, singing gospel songs. It seemed like Nyikadzino had a premonition he was going to die.”
Mutandavari revealed that around 10PM, Nyikadzino was walking alone in front of them while Shezhu and he were walking together.
After arriving at his homestead, the witness left Shezhu and Nyikadzino to continue their journey, which is when Saul allegedly attacked and killed Nyikadzino.
He revealed that Shezhu ambushed victim and then cut his throat with a six-inch knife, resulting in his death on the spot.
Sabhuku Kandira, the local headman, said accused person had a history of violence.
“Shezhu has a history of violence and crimes. He previously attempted to kill his own parents, removed his father’s donkey’s eyes, and attempted to rape a 12-year-old girl.”
Kandira also revealed that Shezhu had paid bribes to the police to avoid arrest for his previous crimes.
Esteri Gasiya, the mother of the child Shezhu attempted to rape, blamed the police for their mishandling of her daughter’s case.
“It affected my child to see the person who attempted to rape her every day at her school doing community service,” she said.
She encouraged law enforcement agents to give Shezhu a life sentence, highlighting that he is a threat to the community.
The lifeless body of Nyikadzino was later discovered the following morning by a passerby, who informed the community which led to assailant’s arrest.
Accused person is currently in police custody at Norton Police Station. — NewZimbabwe
